Colorado River Academy:

Learn to Raft and Camp on the Upper Colorado River

The Colorado River Academy 2-Night Trip is an immersive rafting and camping experience designed to give families the time and training needed to truly understand how multi-day river trips work. Set along the scenic Upper Colorado River near Kremmling, Colorado, this extended adventure blends beautiful rafting with hands-on river training so participants can gain the skills and confidence to plan their own overnight river expeditions.

The experience begins before anyone steps onto the river. Prior to the trip, guides meet with your family for a two-hour planning session at your home to walk through the logistics of a real river trip. During this meeting we review gear, explain how permits work, discuss meal planning, demonstrate how to pack coolers and dry boxes, and answer questions about equipment, safety, and trip organization. This pre-trip session helps families understand how river adventures are planned and prepares everyone to participate in the experience once on the water.

During the river portion of the trip, guides introduce essential rafting skills such as rigging a raft, organizing gear, packing coolers and river food, and understanding boat ramp etiquette. Participants also learn the basics of rowing or paddling a raft, reading the river, and working together as a crew while enjoying the splashy fun and scenic views that make the Upper Colorado one of the best family rafting trips in Colorado.

With three days on the river and two nights at camp, there is time for deeper river training and more hands-on learning. Guides continue teaching skills such as loading and balancing boats, managing river gear during the day, understanding how camps are selected, and practicing efficient systems that make longer river trips run smoothly.

Once we arrive at camp each evening, the learning continues as guides demonstrate how to set up an efficient riverside camp, including kitchen layout, food preparation, dishwashing systems, and organized gear storage. Families also learn about campfire safety, Leave No Trace principles, and the teamwork that makes overnight river trips enjoyable for everyone.

Evenings on the river are often the highlight of the adventure. After helping prepare a riverside meal, families gather around the campfire to relax, share stories, and enjoy the quiet beauty of the Colorado night sky. There may also be opportunities for short hikes, swimming, fishing, or simply exploring the peaceful river corridor.

Safety is woven throughout the experience. Guides demonstrate important river safety skills including how to help someone back into the raft using their life jacket, how to throw and use a rescue rope, and how to stay safe around moving water and camp environments.

By the end of the trip, participants leave with far more than just great memories. Families gain practical rafting and camping skills, a deeper understanding of river travel, and the confidence to organize and enjoy their own multi-day rafting adventures throughout Colorado and the West.
